GVWR: Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the tare (empty) weight of the chassis plus its rated payload (container(s) plus cargo.). A chassis’ actual weight (GVW) should never exceed GVWR. It is a structural rating based on the physical capacities of major components.  GVWR could be of concern if applying for overweight permits, i.e. it cannot be exceeded.

Note that local and federal regulations for allowable weight are determined by the bridge formula which is completely independent of GVW and GVWR. It is the operator’s responsibility to comply with legal requirements with all load-carrying configurations; bridge formula compliance is measured on scales and distances between axles.
